The Clouds of War

by Gordon Buttars

Volume 3 – The Clouds of War takes place between 1932 and 1942. After dealing with the loss of their baby, Curly has a two year assignment with the Bureau of Aeronautics in Washington, D.C.. Being so close to home and family, they once more move on with their lives. After his assignment is complete, they move to Providence, Rhode Island so Curly could take a post graduate course at the Naval War College in order to further his career. While there, they become acquainted with Captain William F. Halsey and his wife Fan. They move again, this time back to Norfolk for a short assignment to a squadron based there and Geannie returns to teaching school, which is followed by a stint as a flight instructor at Pensacola, Florida. His next assignment takes them back to Norfolk once more where Curly is the commander of a squadron attached to the USS Enterprise and later as the air group commander. Geannie and the kids spend that summer in Roanoke.
When the ship is sent to San Diego, it meant yet another move across the country. After getting settled, a surprise move sends the Enterprise to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and Geannie and the kids again follow. In Hawaii, they are reunited with Geannie's dear friend, Ramona. Curly's next assignment puts him on the bridge of the Enterprise as the Executive officer, followed by serving on Admiral Halsey's staff. In those capacities, he spends long periods away from his family. While living in Hawaii, by a twist of fate, they just missed finding the answers to their questions.
As the clouds of war grew more ominous, plans were made to send Geannie and the kids home to Roanoke where it would be safe after nearly two years in Paradise. On the morning that Curly was returning from a secret mission, he flew in to Pearl Harbor only to be shot down in the Japanese sneak attack. As he makes his way back to the base, to his horror he discovered that the unimaginable has happened, leaving him to grieve, while fighting a war.
