The Case

(April 15, 2026)

I’ve been pouring over these reports all night, and still don’t have a clue. I don’t know how many notes I’ve taken only to wad them up and toss them in the trash; my head is spinning. What am I missing? I need a break. Maybe some fresh air will clear my head.

Stepping out onto the balcony, the city air is anything but fresh.

Back at my desk, I take one more look at the report. I find an envelope buried at the bottom of the stack. How did I miss this? Inside are several photographs. I look them over carefully one by one, but they don’t shed any light on the case. How did I miss this?

Then I find a still image from a surveillance camera. I was about to put it aside and move on to the next one. As I set it down, there it was. I picked it up again. How did I miss it? The two men with their backs to the camera are the victims. The man in the hoodie has to be the perpetrator.
