The Chase

(July 15, 2026)

All my life, I’ve chased things I couldn’t catch: jobs, success, fame, fortune, and—yes—women. They were always elusive dreams with nothing to show for them. Usually, my pursuits ended down a rabbit hole, or I was a day late and a dollar short. I managed to survive on one dead-end job after another, waiting for a lucky break.

Now, at forty, I’m still chasing. But suddenly, everything I ever wanted has fallen into my lap as if from nowhere. It involves another move, but I’ve moved around so much that everything I own fits into one suitcase.

I had my train ticket. All I needed to do was board the train bound for success.

While waiting in the station restaurant for lunch, I got distracted when a gorgeous woman struck up a conversation. Women are never attracted to me, let alone one as beautiful as her. I lost all track of time.

When I finally realized the train was leaving, I grabbed my bag and hopelessly chased after it, watching my dreams speed down the tracks.
