The Christmas Tree (Christmas Eve 1977) |
![]() |
As I sit and admire the beauty of a simple pine tree arrayed in the majesty of Christmas and the gifts of love beneath it, my heart takes courage. No, the tree and the presents are not the source of this courage but what they suggest to the mind.
The tree, simple and ordinary. The man neighbors knew as Jesus of Nazareth, the carpenter. The tinsel and ornaments deck the tree in beauty as this man, Jesus, assumes his true identity; clothed with priesthood, with power from on high, with Godhood. The lights around the tree fill the room with a dim light that enables one to see the gifts beneath the tree. Jesus had a light to shine; the gospel of love, peace, and brotherhood. Even the gospel of Jesus Christ. The brightly colored balls that hang from the branches; worlds with out end. The garland that winds it way up to the star on top; the iron rod that leads to tree of life and the Celestial Kingdom. Christ taught us to give. Not only by giving of his life that we might live, or his sacrifice in Gethsemane, but also by giving of himself; his time and talents to heal the sick, provide strength, courage, and faith. To teach love, and share love, and feel love. The gift of love is what lies beneath this lowly evergreen. To give because of love for another, to bring happiness to them. To humbly receive the gifts of love and warmth and kindness from them. To follow the example of the Great Gift Giver. This Christmas Eve, several words, phrases, and ides come to mind just in time for an exciting new year in which to incorporate these things into our lives. Words such as love, trust, and peace. Kindness, godliness, and charity. Faith, courage, wisdom, and knowledge. Strength, righteousness, and goodness. Mercy, forgiveness, and giving. All of these and much more we learn from Jesus; the Christ, Savior, Master, Redeemer, and Lord. The Law Giver. Emanuel, the Prince of Peace, King of kings and Lord of lords, The Messiah. Creator, Friend, the Lamb of God. He who lives and will come again, Mediator, even the Son of God. Yes, my soul takes courage in my faith and testimony of Him. Through him I can succeed, surmount obstacles and over come all. Amen |
