The June Day

(June 18, 2025)

It was on end of those prefect June days, I love June. What’s better it’s my birthday. My wife asked what I wanted to do. I told her I wanted to do a little fishing this morning while it was still cool. Being the sweetheart that she is she agreed that I could use some time to my self, beside the real celebrating would be this afternoon.

I puled my boat to the boat ramp on the river and put in, cast my line, and drifted down stream with the current; more reflecting than fishing. Where had all the years gone? How did the grandkids grow up so fast? My thoughts were interrupted by a tug on the line; it was only a snag.

My thoughts took me back through the year. Seventy years sounds like a long time but they have passed like a dream: some sweet and some a nightmare. ‘77 was a bad year as was ‘86. Then there’s the last 20 years when life got turned upside down again.

Again my thoughts were interrupted. A doe came out of a stand of trees and down to the river bank for a drink, either not caring I was there or didn’t notice.

My chain of thought lost, it was time to head home. The family is all getting together for steaks on the grill, corn on the cob, and German chocolate cake, as usual, and ice cream. What a magical day.
