The sun was just rising to a choirs of coyotes adding tension to the a nervous bunch of settlers—including old men, young men, and even a feisty woman—anticipating the inevitable attack when 500 Comanche braves would come pouring out of the canyon, their ponies thundering toward the isolated outpost where they had held up since the last skirmish had reduced their numbers lessening their chances of making it out alive this time, every man ready to die if it meant holding them off until help arrived to defend the settlers, and now the still morning air was was filled with the sound of hundreds of hooves pounding the desert sand, a bugle announcing arrival the cavalry. |
